As most of you know I am huge supporter of Human Rights. I believe everyone should be treated equal and be given the same caliber of opportunities as anyone else. I totally support LGBT rights and believe that this will be one of the major defining movements of our generation. I was watching the intense special on PBS the other night about the Stonewall Uprising. I actually began crying as I watched the video, thinking how far we as a nation have come and yet far we still have to go. The special has played a few times, next time its on in your area make sure to sit down and watch this special. We tend to forget about the trailblazers of human rights that came before us. We celebrate the Freedom Riders, the Tianannmen Square protest, the racial sit-ins that sprinkled the south, yet the just as important protest for gender and sexual rights seem to be downplayed as this is still a dangerous politically charged topic. This is where the battle still rages we need to celebrate the long distance we have already come. As Orlando ramps up for Gay Days at the beginning of next month now is better than ever to stop and think about these distances traveled and journeys to still ramp up for.
I believe one of the main points of stress comes from the intersection of gay rights and religious views. I studied the Bible for five during my undergrad and I am more convinced than ever that the Bible does not reject homosexuality and actually celebrates it as an equal form of love between two people. I won't get into the discussion here, I've done it enough before but if you want I would highly recommend the Daniel A. Helminiak book 'What the Bible Really Says about Homosexuality.' This book sums up my beliefs better than any other published piece I have ever read. I saw this video that summed up the journey that has been traversed and the battle that still is being fought.
