Key West Pride Fest

Today was the first day of true campaigning with Arth.  We spent the day at the Key West Pride Fest passing out info and meeting people.  It was so great to meet the many locals and visitors, all focused on helping bring true openness to the future of this great state.  Key West has been beyond anything I imagined, a true tropical small tourism outpost of a town on the edge of the state.  Everyone has been extremely welcoming and hospitable.

We sold Micheal's new book and gave out copies of his former documentary about how he transformed a crack town part of Deland into a beautiful thriving Garden District.  I was surprised by the response of people interested in both items.  Michael has spent 16 years researching for this book about democracy and the American political system.   He has some interesting facts in it and many I had not formally known.

Today's festival was filled with countless people supporting equal rights for all, no hate speech or negative signs anywhere that I saw.  Instead the street was filled with laughter, smiles, good times, and guys in their underwear. lol.  The film crew began the filming today.  Having cameras on at all times kept me in line but after a few hours the cameras seemed to disappear.  The two people making the film are both super cool, we talked a lot at lunch.  It was just them, Michael, his daughter, and one other intern.  The others were working the booth.  We sat at Denny's really getting to know each other.  The film people both used to live in College Park and know a few people from my neighborhood.

Michael was wired with a mic throughout the day and the boom mic followed him around as he rode his bike through the festival.  Tonight or sometime tomorrow we will be doing individual interviews for the film.  I'm a little nervous about being on the hot seat with a campaign I just started with but I am sure it will go fine.  I mean every one else is just as new as I am so I can't be any worst than them, well I can but you know what I mean.

I was on my feet and in the sun almost the whole day but we had plenty of water and it actually went really fast because all the great people I met.  I know its only been two days since the trip began but I'm already learning so much.

Tomorrow is the finally of the Pride Fest.  Its a big parade down the middle of the island that we will be walking in.

Today was finished off with some KFC in the motel.  The entire meal was filmed with a camera less than 3 feet away from me, I hope I chewed with my mouth closed.  The cameras are seemingly already disappearing from my notice, which can be good and bad.

After dinner one of the other interns and I headed out to Duval St and partied some at Sloppy Joe's and Hogs Breath.  It was really fun to just let loose, have a few drinks and party.  The film crew and another intern met us at Hogs Breath and we all sat at a table and sung along with the classic rock cover band.  Afterwords we took the long walk back to the hotel, a good way across the island from Hogs Breath.  It was nice though getting to know a few of the people I'll be spending the next 8 weeks with on a more personal level.  Yesterday during the drive down we all got to know each other some but with two cars and lots of naps it was harder.  Then today during the festival we all worked so hard and had little time to actually just let loose and relax.

I'm super excited about the next few weeks.  We may get a new film person in Miami and in month two more people join the team.  I can't wait to see what the road has in store for us!
