Before I ever knew anything about the huge response The Bible Illuminated has received I found it on the shelf of a Barnes and Noble. I quickly grabbed Maggie and showed her this new Bible. We both glanced through it and thought it was pretty cool. A few days later I seem to have been bombarded by reviews, critics, and praise of it.
It is very similar to one of my favorite quite time Bibles, The Way. The Way is a similar idea to The Bible Illuminated but with a 1972 flare. It has little introductions on each book that ties it into the current culture.
I have been using my The Way Bible since mid-middle school and love it but its covered in duct tape. Before I used it my father used it and there was a few times that even Billy Graham has used this very Bible. I am glad to see a new version of this cool idea, now I can put down my very used family heirloom Bible and get one of these new Illuminated Bibles.
In this visual based culture (interactive now too) its good to see the Church catching up. I hope that this spurs others to update their aging style. We can be hip, relevant, and cutting edge if we focus on the things that matter, if we put down our empty traditions and storm up new ways of doing things. It is possible but are we willing to do it?
Have any of you used this Bible yet? Whats its reaction with students?

I flipped through Bible Illuminated at Borders the other day and love the approach -- and WOW, the photography!
I agree, its format speaks volumes of our kind of society. I'd like to see how this version's performing in a year or so -- whether or not Bible Illuminated can get more people to read (and think critically) about the stories of the Bible.
It could have a pretty substantial impact!
